Island of Losinj
Island of Losinj is one of the most important in the Cres-Losinj archipelago. Once connected with Cres island, they are now separated by just 12m of sea, in the Osor area. Island had almost no residents until the middle of 13th century, and by the 19th century it evolved into a naval force of admirable proportions. Mali Losinj, the biggest city on the island was held 2nd most important port of the Adriatic, following Trieste. Accordingly, sailors from Losinj were regarded as one of the Adriatic's best.
Beautiful green island is almost entirely covered in Mediterranean vegetation, mostly pine trees, rosemary and maquis, whose resin vapor combined with the salty fresh air from the open sea makes Losinj an incredibly healthy island, specially for those who suffer from breathing related problems. The exceptionally rejuvenating climate is why Losinj got the second name "island of vitality".
Sea around the island is a home to many dolphins and the first dolphin reserve in the Mediterranean.
