Jelsa

Jelsa has been a town of sailors and tradesmen for centuries. Beautiful mansions built for them decorate the town even today. Peaceful and quiet, it is a perfect place for long romantic walks in the sunset, by the lovely beaches and pine trees. Sv. Ivan church is the oldest building in Jelsa, dating to 15th century. Nowdays, it also hosts numerous religious events and theatre plays, specially during summer. In the vicinity of town, there is another fascinating historical site, Grapceva cave.  In it, remains of the Neolithic residents of the island were found, including the oldest symbol of ship in Europe, found on a ceramic pot.
